WALDORF PEDAGOGY

Respecting the evolutionary stages

If you are considering that your children enter Umai, the first thing you should know is that we do things differently. Reading some texts and watching documentaries about Waldorf pedagogy will help you better understand how we work, why we do what we do and when we do it. In addition, families are required to be willing to get involved in the life of the community and to create the best environment among children, relationships between families and the Umai team, this being an example for all.

Waldorf communities or schools have a clear goal of children's mental and emotional development.

Contrary to many other teaching methods, childhood is not considered to be a stage of preparation for adult life, but rather a very important phase in a person's life that affects physical, mental and emotional health. Therefore, education focuses on developing the child in body, mind and spirit, strengthening him from an early age in his own self-knowledge.

Waldorf pedagogy seeks to educate the whole child, balancing practical work with their hands, with the progressive development of their individual will, their imagination and their intellectual capacities. These three areas are worked on, using different emphases and methodologies, in three stages:

  • First Stage, kindergarten (from 0 to 7 years old):  It focuses on the development of fine and gross motor skills, visuospatial ability and knowledge of the physical environment that surrounds them. To achieve this, Waldorf schools create warm environments with activities that make sense to children such as cooking, singing, ring games, planting, playing, etc.

  • Second Stage, school age (from 7 to 14 years old): This phase revolves around creativity and imagination. The teacher must teach the areas of mathematics, languages,  knowledge of the environment through games and the invention of stories that encourage creativity. Art becomes an essential part of learning.

  • Third Stage, young and adult age (from 14 to 21 years old): Here it is a question of cementing their personality and the critical spirit is motivated. At this stage, educators must motivate students to make value judgments about the world around them.
